Guest Post: Cy Todd

Hi Everyone!

I don't know about you, but when I got a message from Corey,
asking me to consider doing a guest post on her blog,
well… I had just finished reading about Rebecca the Metropolitan Opera singer in NYC,
and thought… how do I follow that?
Then I read about Jennifer in New Zealand,
and again, I'm thinking… how do I follow that?
Then I gave up.
What could possibly be of interest to Corey's readers about my life?
And besides, she probably wrote to all her followers,
so she will never miss me.
WRONG!!
Yesterday I got a little "reminder" that she would love to hear from me.
Oh dear… well, here goes…

I'm an American, living in the South of France.
Maybe that's interesting?
I landed here about twelve years ago, with my work.
I work for CRU, a Christian organization, doing
Leadership Development Consulting, from a Christian point of view.
It's been gratifying.
I'm NOT looking forward to retiring and moving back to the USA.
I love living in Europe and have actually lived most of my life
in Germany, Russia, and now France.

They say we become "third culture" people
not quite American anymore,
and not completely European.
I've experienced that whenever I go home to Florida/Michigan each year-
well, not in 2020.

An artist's drawing of my village: CagnessurMer
It's a charming village, on the Mediterranean,
complete with fishing boats and palm trees on the main avenue.

Not far from my village is the Principality of Monaco.
This is the inside of their main shopping mall at Christmas, 2019.
There's a stark comparison. That's interesting.

How did I meet Corey?

I met Corey once, many years ago, when I first arrived here.
I was researching blogs about France, and up popped "Tongue in Cheek".
I LOVE antiques so I called Corey and arranged to meet up.
She was doing a sale in her friend's home,
so it was the perfect afternoon excursion.
While there, I found a beautiful old (obviously!)
painting of some lilacs,
a still life, with a dark, smokey patina.
It jumped off the wall, into my arms, and a good thing too,
because just as I was paying for it,
Corey's husband Yann mentioned
that he was eyeing it for his office.
Sorry, Yann.

Life in the South of France has had its ups and downs.
The ups are the friends, the wine, the food,
the sunshine and the sea!
The downside is that I've been fighting uterine cancer
for the last twenty months.
Right now, feeling really well.
And thankful every day that I was able
to get my cancer treatments here in France
where healthcare is affordable and high quality.
Here I am wearing my "chemo shirt",
made by a friend, with a velcro "pocket"
covering my chemo port –
this way you don't have to take your shirt off
to get chemo.
Brilliant!

Despite Covid19 in 2020,
I'm living every day to the fullest… as best I can.
In September I went back to Venice Italy
for a wonderful week-long vacation.
I LOVE Venice and have been there six times since 2018.
It only costs about $60 round trip to fly there from here!
If I could, when I retire,
rather than return to the USA,
I would move to Venice.
But that's probably just a pipe dream.
I would do it in a minute if the
the opportunity presented itself.
My Christmas flight there got canceled,
so we'll see what happens in 2021.

Greetings Cy, Jennifer in NZ here and I just want to say how nice it was to read your story, you are doing great work under difficult circumstances. I trust you will continue to recover from your cancer and be able to find a way to make your dream come true to live in Venice..that sounds like a magical idea! It happens to be one of my all time favourite places too…a very long way from NZ, but I have managed to visit twice and will hope to do so again when we are past this Covid horror.
Keep on keeping on a stay away from germs!
Best festive wishes from New Zealand

Just a wonderful post!!! I need to write my story soon. I live in Dallas, Tx (a covid hot spot) and it consumes my day with worry. Your post especially the scripture reminded me to settle down and pray. Your life has been so interesting, let the icing on the cake be retirement in Venice. You forget to tell us how many languages you speak? Praying for a return to good health!

  13. Greetings from Kansas! I love the chemo shirt. Having been through having a port for chemo treatments I can definitely see the advantage in having a shirt like that. I think retiring in France would be wonderful! I hope you continue to regain your strength and live a wonderful, magical life!! Blessings!

  14. a beautiful post. sending light and love your way, Cy.

  16. Oh, you have lived my dream. We have visited Cagnes-sur Mer. Normally we spend two months in the South of France. Having
done so for the last ten years. Not this year though.
Thank you for being brave and writing your story. Alas, I am not so brave.
My thoughts are with you as you go through your journey to health.

Here we all are, thinking that our own personal life story would be boring to others, and it’s the exact opposite. Everyone’s life story is fascinating to me! Yours is especially wonderful, and I am GLAD you’re in France with excellent, affordable healthcare. Your port tee shirt is just a little bit of genius, I am going to ask my sister where her port is, and make one for her! Thank you for sharing. Sending you healing vibes and love.

  18. MERCI to everyone who commented!!
And a big thank you for your prayers.
Thanks to Corey for making my story come alive. God bless you all. Cy xx

  19. Leslie in Oregon

Thank you for telling us about your life, Cy. Your story resonates with me in so many ways, and I’d like to read more of it. My prayers for your full return to good health will join those of so many others. 😘

  20. I loved your story, although the part about fighting cancer made me cry. I think you live in a wonderful part of the world – it will help you heal.Love, Liese

  21. Thank you for sharing here, you have had rich experiences!
I, too, love Venice. Looking forward to visiting after Covid restrictions ease.
I’m an Alaskan, living in Zurich, these past 14 years. I understand about being a 3rd culture person, for sure.
I believe in the power of prayer, and will say a prayer for you, as soon as I press send.
All the best, and God bless you!

  22. Sending my prayers, too, to join those of others. I always admire resilience, which doesn’t mean that we’re always happy, and you seem one of the resilient ones.
